| Showing Your Car |
 |
Showing your car can be a nerve wracking experience, but if you think you're nervous, think about how the buyer must feel. They are preparing themselves to part with thousands, maybe tens of thousands of dollars, and they want to make sure they choose the right car. First off, try and put the buyers at ease by showing them a calm, collected front. Don't be a salesman; we all know how people feel about used car salesmen. Instead, be yourself, be human, because people respond much more to someone they can relate to. You don't want to intimidate them, so present yourself as friendly and responsible and they will respond favorably to you. They're going to be judging you just as much as they're judging your car.
If you're receiving a lot of inquiries, make sure that you make appointments and keep track of them. If you aren't comfortable having strangers come to your home, then offer to meet at a public place, such as a coffee shop or a park. Before letting anyone test drive your car, make sure that your insurance covers other drivers and that the person test driving your car has a valid driver's license issued in your state. Also, always go on the drive with them, NEVER let a stranger drive off in your car alone. In any case, it's best to go with them anyway so that you can answer their questions about the car and make sure that they drive in safe areas. To that end, plan out the "test course" ahead of time, taking the buyer through the city and on the freeway so that they can see how the car drives on different roads.
If you don't want to show off your car alone, it's perfectly acceptable to bring a friend or family member along. However, make sure that you do all the talking because you are the owner and you want the buyer to see you as the expert on the car. If the buyer asks to take your car to their mechanic to have it inspected, make sure that you take their driver license information just in case, though you can avoid having to do this if you get a report from your own mechanic to show buyers. Though it is unlikely that someone will try and con you out of your car, it's always best to err on the side of caution. |
