Negotiate With the Buyer

The form of payment is your decision, so if you don't want to take checks, then don't take checks. You don't have to let the buyer talk you into an arrangement that you aren't comfortable with. If they don't like your decision, that's unfortunate, but there will always be another interested buyer, so don't feel like you have to go with the first person who shows interest in your car. To that end, make sure that you establish the form of payment when you first talk on the phone with the buyer, that way the details will have been worked out ahead of time and you can perform the transaction smoothly.

After the buyer has taken your car for a test drive, and if they seem ready to decide, state your terms for the price of the car and let the negotiations begin. Since you should have given yourself a cushion of a few hundred dollars on the asking price, let the buyer push the price down a little so that they feel like you're being open and reasonable. If they do make a reasonable offer, listen and be prepared to say yes. Counter offers are expected and perfectly acceptable, but you don't want to push them too hard. Make sure that you know what your bottom line is, and stick to it. This all may sound contradictory and confusing, but it is important that you get the full value on your car but also make the buyer feel like they're getting the most for their money.

Don't accept a ridiculously low offer. If a buyer does go too low, politely thank them for their time and move on, but make sure that they have your contact information in case they change their mind. Also, make sure that you're clear on whether there is any warranty attached to the car, or whether you're selling it as-is. If you're selling it as-is, then get it down in writing and have the buyer sign it for your records. You don't want to get tangled up in some battle over repairs down the road if the buyer decides to blame you for any problems that might crop up.
